In Virginia elections are overseen by the Virginia Department of Elections.

REGISTERING TO VOTE IN Virginia:

  • Register online with a valid state ID, by mail, or in person.

  • Must register at least 22 days before an election.

  • Voters registering for the first time can apply for a Virginia Voter Photo ID Card when they submit their voter registration application. 

 PRIMARY RULES:

  • Open Primaries, meaning any registered voter can vote in any primary but each voter can only vote in one.

WAYS TO VOTE:

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO:

  • ID is required to vote, and the rules are strict.

    • Acceptable ID include a recent VA driver's license or US passport, Student ID issued by VA-located institution of higher ed or any private school, an employee ID issued in ordinary course of business, tribal ID, VA Voter Photo ID Card, or any form of government-issued photo ID.

    • Voters without ID can still cast a provisional ballot. They will be given instructions on how to submit proof of ID along with the ballot.
