In South Dakota elections are overseen by the South Dakota Secretary of State.

REGISTERING TO VOTE IN SOUTH DAKOTA:

  • Register by mail or in person at your County Auditors office.

  • Registration must be received at least 15 days before Election Day.

PRIMARY RULES:

  • Semi-Closed Primaries, meaning party-affiliated voters must vote in their own primary but Independents and nonaffiliated voters can choose to vote in the Democratic primary. The Republican primary is closed to non-members. 

WAYS TO VOTE:

  • In Person on Election Day

  • Absentee (Application must be mailed or taken to a local County Elections office before 5:00pm on the day before Election Day.)

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO:

  • ID is required to vote, sort of.

    • Voters without an acceptable ID can sign an affidavit confirming their identity and vote on a regular ballot.

    • Acceptable forms of ID include SD driver’s license or SD state ID card, US government-issued ID, Tribal ID card, or a current student ID card from a SD-located high school or accredited institution of higher learning.
