REGISTERING TO VOTE IN NEW YORK:

  • Register by mail, or in person.

  • Online registration is available through DMV https://dmv.ny.gov/more-info/motor-voter-faqs-0

  • Voters must register 25 days before an election. See below for primary voting deadlines, which are different.

  • Voters must include their current driver’s license number, their last 4 digits of social security number, or a unique State-assigned number when they register, or they will have to show ID their first time at the polls.

PRIMARY RULES:

  • Closed Primaries, meaning you must vote in the primary of the party with which you are registered.

    • NOTE: Changes in party enrollment must be made at least 25 day before the previous year’s general election.

    • New York holds two different primary days, one for federal elections and one for state-wide races. Make sure to include both in your calendar.

WAYS TO VOTE:

  • In Person on Election Day

  • Absentee By Mail or In-Person (NOTE: NYC allows something similar to early voting, but doesn’t call it that. Voters may request an absentee ballot in person at any Board of Elections office up until the day before the election and vote there. Applications to vote by mail can be requested no earlier than 30 days and must be sent in by 7 days before the election. An excuse is required to vote absentee, but proof is not needed.)

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO:

  • ID may be required for first time voters only.

    • New registrants who did not provide one of the required forms of ID at the time of registration must show (either in person or by providing a copy by mail) a current photo ID or copy of a utility bill, bank statement, paycheck or government document (including check) that includes their name and address.
