Louisiana

In Louisiana elections are overseen by the Louisiana Secretary of State.

REGISTERING TO VOTE IN Louisiana:

  • Register online (with a Louisiana state ID), by mail, or in person at your local Registrar of Voters.

  • Must register by October 9th, 2018 by mail or October 16th, 2018 online to vote in the 2018 General Election.

 

PRIMARY RULES:

  • No primaries. The General Election is conducted as a runoff, and if no candidate receives a majority of the vote, an additional runoff election is held AFTER the General Election.

 

WAYS TO VOTE:

  • In Person on Election Day

  • Early (Available from 8:30am-6pm, beginning 14 days before the Election Day and ending 7 days before Election Day. Open Mon-Sat. Early voting is available at these locations. More information here.)

  • By Mail / Absentee (Excuse required. Students may vote absentee in their home district. List of acceptable excuses and more information available here.)

 

Know Before You Go:

  • ID is not required to vote, but is requested.

    • Voters may present a photo ID or sign a written affidavit to prove their identity at the polls.

    • Voters may cast a provisional ballot if there is an issue with the list at their polling place and can kind of whether it was counted here.

  • Louisiana has two General Election dates. Voters will first vote on November 6th, 2018. For races where no party received over 50%, a 2018 General Election runoff will be held on December 8th, 2018.
