Kentucky

In Kentucky, elections are overseen by the Kentucky Board of Elections.

REGISTERING TO VOTE IN KENTUCKY:

  • Register online (with a current Kentucky ID), by mail, or in person.

  • Must register at least 29 days before an election.

PRIMARY RULES:

  • Closed Primaries, meaning voter can only vote in the primary of the party with which they are registered.

  • NOTE: Party registration rules are strict. Voters changing their party affiliation must complete the change before December 31stof the previous year.

 

WAYS TO VOTE:

  • In Person on Election Day

  • Absentee In Person (Excuse required. Students may vote absentee in person or by mail. Anybody who lives in KY but will be out of the country on Election Day is required to vote in person at their local County Clerk’s office.)

  • Absentee By Mail (Excuse required, and rules are slightly different than for in person absentee voting. Students may vote absentee. Request a ballot from your local county clerk’s office.)

 

Know Before You Go:

  • ID is required to vote, but laws aren’t stringent.

    • People personally acquainted with the poll workers do not need to show ID.

    • Other acceptable forms of ID include any form of ID containing both picture and signature.
